Practicing split stitch

Learn the split stitch and where this stitch is useful: A soft line made by piercing the previous stitch.

Where to use this stitch

A soft line made by piercing the previous stitch.

Before you try it

Mount a small piece of cotton or linen firmly in a hoop. Start with a short working length of embroidery floss. Pause the tutorial after each movement and try two or three repetitions on scrap fabric before stitching on a finished garment.

What to check

Look at tension, consistent spacing and how the stitch sits on the surface. If the cloth gathers, release some thread tension and begin again. Compare your sample to the movement shown in the creator’s video.
